As of right now, I have a crap-ton of Durasteel from my progression but I can't even smelt it because Daddy FU has decided that I need to earn 1 shekel per second to buy the ability to do so for over 3k. The amount of research needed to progress in the tree is so large that it flat out makes these generation needs irrelevant. It's a wonderful concept but the ways to get research are so horrifically few and they have so few yields that it ends up as needless busywork.
Essentially, it was introduced as a way to slow progression down and force you to accumulate a resource called Research to advance into things such as new weapons, farming and even making new blocks to build with. The reload system of Frackin' is essentially a knockoff of that concept.įollowing this is Research.
Starbound frackin universe mod#
It takes inspiration from an ancient and since deleted mod where you had to craft ammo and reload your guns, before Chucklefish smited it into oblivion.
It disrupts gameplay heavily, although I do like the idea behind it. This isn't annoying in theory but it definitely is in practice when I can pick up a Proto Gun and not deal with this annoying feature added by the very mod it comes from but I can't loot a random sniper rifle without getting this annoying, 'Woop time to reload!' nonsense. Some guns are changed to have ammo counts (this is randomized and a lot of guns you can craft even within the mod lack this feature), meaning after every few shots, you take a few seconds to reload. I think I'll start with the overhauled gameplay and progression. However, not all here is sunshine and rainbows. It's very evident that the Devs of FU put a lot of effort into what they do and I feel that a lot of people overlook that. I feel the blocks are also worth mentioning, with gorgeous textures for blocks such as the Aether themed blocks being downright amazing and for a long time, unrivaled in their theme until the arrival of Arcana (another giant mod I plan to make a review on here later). The soundtracks are second to none, the added weapons often are interesting and enjoyable to handle and you can essentially progress through the mod however you deem fit- even to the extent of farming bees for resources. New races, new planets, some RPG-ish elements with said races, gas giants become explorable- the list is practically infinite and the world is your oyster.
The Good: So, Frackin' essentially overhauls the entire game. Following this of course, I wanted to make a review. I've clocked in over 1.8k hours, most of that being with Frackin' Universe and I've completed the mod a few times. Prelude: I've played Starbound ever since the good ol days of pre 1.0 where lore was fun, game was fun and people generally enjoyed things.
